The first major piece of casting on the highly anticipated sequel Pitch Perfect 2—outside of the returning members, that is—has landed.  Variety reports that True Grit and Ender’s Game actress Hailee Steinfeld is in talks to join the cast of the music-filled follow-up, adding that if Pitch Perfect 2 does well at the box office, the idea is for Steinfeld to take over as the star of the franchise in Pitch Perfect 3 and future installments.  That’s a big get for Steinfeld and an interesting choice for the film, which starts production soon.

Hit the jump for more.  Pitch Perfect 2 opens in theaters on May 15, 2015.

Elizabeth Banks confirmed the news of Steinfeld’s involvement on Twitter with the following welcome note:

@HaileeSteinfeld Welcome to the Barden Bellas! Now lace up your dancing shoes, and get your tush down to Baton Rouge. #PitchPerfect2

Plot details are under wraps for the aca-promising sequel, per Variety, but the majority of the original cast, including Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, and Brittany Snow, are returning.  Excitingly, Elizabeth Banks is making her feature directorial debut on the project with a script by Pitch Perfect scribe Kay Cannon.

Though Pitch Perfect 2 will obviously once again involve signing, Steinfeld actually has experience with music-geared projects.  She plays the daughter of Mark Ruffalo’s record producer character in Once director John Carney’s upcoming film Begin Again, and she gets a chance to show off her vocal talents in the pic.

Steinfeld also has a number of other projects already in the can, including the actioner Barely Lethal and the crime drama Term Life opposite Vince Vaughn.  She’s mostly stuck to dramatic territory save for Begin Again, but Pitch Perfect 2 will give her the opportunity to explore her comedic side.
