HBO Max is expanding its original content slate with Poor Devil (Pobre Diablo), a new adult animated series about the rebellious son of Satan. Poor Devil is the first European original adult animation production to come exclusively to HBO Max, as streaming services try to boost their catalog worldwide.

During the celebration of the official launch of HBO Max in Europe, the VP of original programming Miguel Salvat announced that Buendia Estudios would produce Poor Devil with animation done at Granada’s Rockyn Animation. Poor Devil will follow Stan, the 18-years-old son of Satan, who’s sent to Earth by his father to bring chaos to the world. However, Stan is more concerned with drinking, partying, and following his dream of becoming a Broadway star, following the trend of teenagers who do precisely the opposite of what their parents ask them to do.

The launch event took place in Madrid, the capital of Spain, one of the six European countries that can access the streaming service starting tomorrow, October 26. Spain is joined by Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Andorra. While HBO Max has plans to expand its services to other European regions, commissioning Poor Devil also underlines the company’s intention of using producers from its different consumer markets in order to boost its catalog with diverse original series and movies.

Written by Miguel Esteban, Joaquín Reyes and Ernesto Sevilla, and co-written by Helena Pozuelo, Poor Devil’s first season will be directed by Esteban. While Poor Devil is the first animated series in Esteban’s career, the director already worked in comedy productions such as Movistar Plus’ Nasdrovia, Netflix’s The Neighbour, and Comedy Central’s The End of Comedy.

Poor Devil is one of six original Spanish productions coming to HBO Max between the service’s launch in Europe tomorrow and the end of 2022. The drama series Todo lo Otro and the true-crime docuseries Dolores: The Truth About the Wanninkhof Case will be available from day one. Other series set to launch on HBO Max are Sin Novedad, a local adaptation of the Australian crime comedy No Activity; Venga Juan, the third installment of a massively popular TBS comedy in Spain; and García, a comic-book inspired thriller about a superspy who gets frozen in the 1950s and now needs to adapt to lie in modern-day Madrid.

There’s no release date yet for Poor Devil.
