A new “freestyle” video from Universal’s Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping has been released online, giving us a look at Andy Samberg’s Conner4Real in straight up rap mode. In the vein of a concert documentary, the film chronicles Samberg’s Conner4Real as he faces a crisis of popularity on his sophomore solo album, after which he attempts to reunite his Beastie Boys-esque group. As directed by Akiva Schaffer (Hot Rod) and Jorma Taccone (MacGruber), the film looks to be a hilarious take on the culture of pop music today, with The Lonely Island flavor sprinkled throughout.
While the movie itself looks really funny, I’m almost more excited that the release of Popstar also heralds the arrival of a brand new Lonely Island album. This new song, “I’m a Weirdo”, is simultaneously a Conner4Real song from the movie and a brand new piece of music from Samberg, Schaffer, and Taccone, and not so shockingly, it’s terrific. The lyrics are silly, but the song itself is incredibly catchy, and the accompanying video plays directly into the ego and dishonesty of Samberg’s Conner4Real character.
So take a look at the video/song below, and prepare yourself for a bevy of new Lonely Island songs via the Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping soundtrack. The film also stars Taccone, Schaffer, Sarah Silverman, Tim Meadows, Maya Rudolph, and Joan Cusack. Produced by Judd Apatow, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping opens in theaters on June 3rd.
Here’s the official synopsis for Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping:
Universal Pictures’ Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is headlined by musical digital-shorts superstars Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, collectively known as The Lonely Island. The comedy goes behind the scenes as singer/rapper Conner4Real (Samberg) faces a crisis of popularity after his sophomore album flops, leaving his fans, sycophants and rivals all wondering what to do when he’s no longer the dopest star of all.
The latest comedy from blockbuster producer Judd Apatow (Trainwreck, Superbad, Knocked Up) co-stars Sarah Silverman, Tim Meadows and Maya Rudolph and many of the biggest names in comedy and music in cameo performances. Co-directed by Schaffer and Taccone and written by The Lonely Island trio, Popstar is also produced by Rodney Rothman (producer of Get Him to the Greek, Forgetting Sarah Marshall; co-writer of 22 Jump Street), as well as Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone.
