The first image of the new Power Rangers reboot costumes is here, and boy are they colorful. We kind of had a heads up that we’d be in for something different after getting a look at Elizabeth BanksPoison Ivy-lookin’ villain Rita Repulsa, but these new Power Rangers costumes look a bit more like an exoskeleton or superhero costume than the traditional armor that was worn on the long-running TV series. Regardless, I’ll admit I don’t necessarily hate these new costumes, although the Robocop-esque mouthpieces are a tad odd.

Per EW, who debuted this first image, this is “translucent extraterrestrial armor that crystallizes around their bodies.” As director Dean Israelite—who helmed the sci-fi found footage pic Project Almanac—explains, the suit design is an extension of the character themes:

“The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis. These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.”

The production designer Andrew Menzies confirms that the costume is indeed alien in nature, saying “Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.” Indeed, the look of these costumes very strongly evokes a superhero movie, as it looks as though Power Rangers is very much being angled to appeal to fans of that highly lucrative genre and not just the younger-skewing fans of the TV series.

The cast of the film is made up largely of newcomers/unknowns, with Becky G as Yellow Ranger Trini, Ludi Lin as Black Ranger Zack, Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger Jason, Naomi Scott as Pink Ranger Kimberly, and RJ Cyler as Blue Ranger Billy.
