Spear and Fang are back. Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal, one of last year’s very best television series, will be back on October 4. That’s when another five episodes of the blood-soaked series, charting the friendship between a caveman and a dinosaur and their series of pulpy misadventures, begins as part of Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block. And – even better news! – Primal has officially been renewed for a 10-episode second season in 2021. (Tartakovsky alluded to this in our recent Collider Connected chat.)

If you never watched the first five episodes, you should get on that (it’s currently available on the Adult Swim website and on HBO Max). It’s one of the most amazing animated series ever, combining Tartakovsky’s uncanny knack for staging action (honed on his groundbreaking series Samurai Jack) with a deeply emotional, melancholic bond between two incredibly violent creatures forced together in the unlikeliest of circumstances. Oh – and the show is completely dialogue free, which makes it an even greater, more enviable feat. It’s pure visual wonder and a complete distillation of what makes Tartakovsky one of the most exciting filmmakers working today (in animation or otherwise).

The first episode of this new batch of Primal has actually already aired. As part of their annual April Fool’s Day stunt, Adult Swim actually aired "Plague of Madness" in its entirety. But if you (like me) missed out on that special preview, October 4 will be here before you know it. It’s also very exciting to know that Adult Swim has committed to Tartakovsky’s singular vision of primordial adventure and has re-upped the show for another 10 episodes. We cannot wait to see how far they push things in the following year (and hopefully beyond). But, really, can we get a Fang action figure, statue, plush, something please?
