Fox Confirms PRISON BREAK Sequel Series for 2016

     August 6, 2015

Add Prison Break to the list of old TV shows that are getting revived. We learned in June that Fox was developing an “event series” return for Prison Break, and the network confirmed today at the TCA press tour that Prison Break is indeed coming back in 2016 as a 10-episode event series. Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell will both be back for the show, which Co-Chairman and CEO Dana Walden described as a sequel that “picks up the characters several years after we left them in the last season of the show.”

Those who stuck with Prison Break to the end may be wondering how Miller’s character can come back in a sequel, but Walden explained, “What [executive producer] Paul [Scheuring] pitched to us was a very logical and believable—in the world of Prison Break—explanation for why our characters are alive and still moving around the world.”

Miller and Purcell have been working together on The CW’s The Flash and will star in the spinoff series DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, but it appears they’ll find time in their schedules for this Prison Break return. It’s unclear what other actors might be back, but this isn’t the first time Fox has revived an old hit for a miniseries-like event. 24 returned last year with 24: Live Another Day, which actually did quite well in the ratings despite the fact that creatively, 24 felt a bit like a relic from the past in our current cultural landscape. And while Fox may yet continue this “revival” trend with another series in the future (we already have The X-Files coming in 2016), I wouldn’t exactly hold my breath for a Firefly continuation. Though stranger things have happened…
