It looked like after Chappie flopped, director Neill Blomkamp was going to will himself into directing a new Alien film and use concept art shared via social media as his tool for getting his way. And it was actually working until Ridley Scott turned his attention back to Prometheus 2, now titled “Alien: Paradise Lost”. That put two Alien movies into development, and it’s not like Blomkamp is ever going to outrank Scott.

Blomkamp acknowledged that there’s nothing much he can do with his movie for the time being even though Scott is a producer on the untitled Alien sequel. The District 9 director took to Twitter earlier tonight to inform his followers:

Will he attempt to tackle District 10? Does he have other half-baked sci-fi concepts cooking around in his head? Or will he release more fan art in order to commandeer another beloved sci-fi franchise? The goodwill he garnered from District 9 hasn’t completely evaporated, so if he moves quickly, he might be able to get something off the ground. As for Alien: Paradise Lost, filming is set to begin next year, and the movie will be released on May 30, 2017. If Blomkamp ever returns to his Alien picture, it will be interesting to see where it lands in relation to Paradise Lost. If Fox is happy with what they’re seeing from Scott, will they want to fast-track the franchise and get another installment rolling as soon as possible, or will they keep it in Scott’s hands and let him determine the pace? How do you feel about Blomkamp’s participating going into stasis? Are you glad to see him move on to other projects, or were you eager to see him tackle Ripley and xenomorphs? Or should we leave the Alien franchise well enough alone, and that goes for Scott’s movies as well? Sound off in the comments section.
