Back in July, we reported that Rachel McAdams was eying a lead role in Marvel's upcoming Doctor Strange adaptation. Now we have confirmation of McAdams starring in the feature opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role. Currently, we don't have any information as to what McAdams' role is exactly, but conventional wisdom tells us that she might be playing the love interest for Cumberbatch's Dr. Stephen Strange.

As The Wrap reports, McAdams herself confirmed her starring role in Doctor Strange while at the Toronto International Film Festival, but Marvel did not follow up with a comment. Tilda Swinton also stars as Strange's mentor, the Ancient One, with Chiwetel Ejiofor playing the villainous Baron Mordo. Mads Mikkelsen is also being courted for a villainous role. If all of these character names sound pretty surreal and mystical to you, you would be correct. McAdams' role may be the most grounded character in an otherwise out-there adaptation, similar to how Natalie Portman's Jane Foster is the audience's Earthbound anchor in the Thor movies.

Not much has been revealed as to the plot of Doctor Strange beyond the obvious origin story, but Cumberbatch did comment on working with Marvel a little while back:

Marvel is a stable of bringing out ordinary comic characters and turning them into screen-like gods. It’s very different, it’s an Astral Plane. There’s a huge new element to this Marvel universe that’s going to be employed in building this story and this character. But you know, I’m really excited about it, about working with Scott [Derrickson] whose imagination is endless, and all the boys and girls at Marvel who know what they’re doing.

Doctor Strange is currently slated for a November 4, 2016 release date, so we should expect some more casting news and confirmations in the coming months or early 2016 at the latest. Scott Derrickson's Doctor Strange starts filming in London this November.
