Brad Peyton has experience destroying the world (San Andreas) and with giant rampaging monsters (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island). He’ll combine both elements in Rampage, the video game adaptation that he promises will be scarier than you’d expect.

During an interview with We Got This Covered for his horror film Incarnate, he said he and the writers are using “the original game as our inspiration,” but that it’s “really going to surprise people in what it delivers.” He explained:

"It’s going to be a lot more emotional, a lot scarier and a lot more real than you’d expect. So you look at that original concept about a lab that affects these animals and makes them rampage, and that’s the nugget. If they called me tomorrow to do Call of Duty, I wouldn’t want to play any of the Call of Duty games. I’d have to come up with something that deserves to be its own thing. That’s where a lot of these movies can go wrong."

The original arcade-style game featured an ape, wolf, and lizard, all genetically modified into gargantuan beasts that rampaged throughout cities. Peyton described the adaptation as “a monster film” at heart, so there’s “still horror elements” to it.

His San Andreas and Journey star Dwayne Johnson is on board in a leading role. Ryan Engle wrote the original draft, which got rewrites from Ryan Condal and Carlton Cuse. It’s unclear when production will start on this, since Johnson has his hands in a variety of franchises. He’s currently filming Jumanji with Jack Black and Karen Gillan, but he said that he’s filming Doc Savage for director Shane Black at some point in 2017, and he’ll have to go on press tours for Baywatch and Fast 8. He also has San Andreas 2 and Journey 3 (both with Peyton), and the long-gestating Shazam!
