Shudder and Neon have released a new NSFW red-band trailer for the upcoming revenge-thriller Revenge, and this thing looks bloody as all get out. Marking the directorial debut of Coralie Fargeat, the film stars Matilda Lutz (Rings) as a woman enjoying a romantic getaway with her wealthy boyfriend whose vacation is disrupted when his sleazy friends arrive unannounced. Tensions mount as the men reveal themselves to be—shocker!—gross and terrible, but this is not a story that leaves the woman as the victim. After a bloody incident that found the men leaving Lutz’s character for dead, she returns with one thing on her mind: vengeance.

This trailer teases a visually striking and colorful revenge thriller with lots of blood. The film has been well-reviewed thus far, and while rape-revenge movies can be tough to watch, this one looks to toe the line between grounded and exploitative really well. Moreover, the dissection of gender roles here is one that I’m curious to see play out against the backdrop of the bloody horror thriller.

Check out the Revenge trailer below and click here to watch our interview with the director and star from Sundance. The film also stars Kevin Janssens, Vincent Colombe, and Guillaume Bouchède. Revenge will be available in theaters and on demand on May 11th and on the Shudder streaming service in the fall.

Here’s the official synopsis for Revenge:

Debut director Coralie Fargeat announces her stunning arrival, painting a crimson canvas of hypnotic beauty and bloody retribution in this razor-sharp feminist subversion of the revenge-thriller.

Jen (fearlessly embodied by Matilda Lutz, Rings) is enjoying a romantic getaway with her wealthy boyfriend which is suddenly disrupted when his sleazy friends arrive for an unannounced hunting trip. Tension mounts in the house until the situation abruptly––and viciously––intensifies, culminating in a shocking act that leaves Jen left for dead. Unfortunately for her assailants, Jen survives and reemerges with a relentless, wrathful intent: revenge.

A white-knuckle tale of transgression and transformation, REVENGE gloriously blurs the lines of vengeance and survival while simultaneously delivering a ferocious dissection of gender and genre.
