The CW just gave us another peak into the color-saturated world of Riverdale, the upcoming drama based on the popular Archie comics. However, as the previously-released trailer and this new poster makes clear, this isn’t your parents’ Archie…

The just-released poster for Riverdale has a sexy murder subtext earnestly on display in only a way The CW can ever really hope to pull off. In it, we see Archie (K.J. Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), and Veronica (Camila Mendes) seated at a Pop’s diner booth as Jughead (Cole Sprouse), Cheryl (Madalaine Petsch), and Josie (Ashleigh Murray) look in through the window. It’s a squeaky-clean-on-the-surface image of shared-milkshake teenage-dom with a dark underbelly belied by the tagline: “A great place to get away with it all.” Could one of these kids be Riverdale’s murderer?

We know from the Riverdale trailer and official synopsis that the Twin Peaks-inspired series starts with the shocking murder of Cheryl’s twin brother, Jason Blossom. The tagline suggests that one of the teens featured in the poster could have done it, a question that will no doubt fuel the entire first season. (Please though, let them answer the question of Jason’s murder by the end of Season 1). My money is on a parental figure, a la Veronica Mars, but I wouldn’t put it past any of these genetically-blessed kiddies, either. Check out the new poster below:

If you’re looking for other suspects, Riverdale also stars Sarah Habel as Ms. Grundy, Mädchen Amick as Alice, Marisol Nichols as Hermione, and Luke Perry as Archie’s dad Fred Andrews. Molly Ringwald was just cast as Archie’s mom Mary Andrews for Episodes 10 and 11.

With Pretty Little Liars and Vampire Diaries heading off the air, TV has a teen mystery drama vacuum to fill. And, from the looks of this poster, Riverdale may very well fit the bill. Like much of The CW’s current programming schedule, Riverdale touts Arrow-verse creator Greg Berlanti as an executive producer. Presumably, Berlanti will be calling on his Dawson’s Creek and Everwood experience to dial the teen angst in this show up to 11.

Here’s the official synopsis for Riverdale, as well as some images from its pilot; the new series is set to premiere on Thursday, January 28th at 8 p.m. ET:

As a new school year begins, the town of Riverdale is reeling from the recent, tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom — and nothing feels the same… Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) is still the all-American teen, but the summer’s events made him realize that he wants to pursue a career in music — not follow in his dad’s footsteps—despite the sudden end of his forbidden relationship with Riverdale’s young music teacher, Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel).

Which means Archie doesn’t have anyone who will mentor him — certainly not singer Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), who is only focused on her band, the soon-to-be-world-famous Pussycats. It’s all weighing heavily on Archie’s mind — as is his fractured friendship with budding writer and fellow classmate Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse). Meanwhile, girl-next-door Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) is anxious to see her crush Archie after being away all summer, but she’s not quite ready to reveal her true feelings to him. And Betty’s nerves – which are hardly soothed by her overbearing mother Alice (Mädchen Amick) aren’t the only thing holding her back.

When a new student, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), arrives in town from New York with her mother Hermione (Marisol Nichols), there’s an undeniable spark between her and Archie, even though Veronica doesn’t want to risk her new friendship with Betty by making a play for Archie. And then there’s Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch)… Riverdale’s Queen Bee is happy to stir up trouble amongst Archie, Betty, and Veronica, but Cheryl is keeping secrets of her own. What, exactly, is she hiding about the mysterious death of her twin brother, Jason? Riverdale may look like a quiet, sleepy town, but there are dangers in the shadows…
