Robert Redford on ‘Pete’s Dragon’, Making ‘Sneakers’, and ‘Captain America: The Winter Solider’

     August 9, 2016

It’s not often you get to talk with a living legend. But that’s what I was able to do at the Pete’s Dragon junket in Los Angeles when I interviewed Robert Redford. As a fan of his work for what seems like my entire life, it was a bit surreal sitting across from him for the first time. While over the past decade I’ve spoken with some amazing filmmakers and actors, I’ll admit getting to talk with Redford is near the top of the list.

During the interview Redford talked about why he wanted to be part of Pete’s Dragon, if he knew when making Captain America: The Winter Solider it would be such a big movie, what he remembers about making Sneakers, and when was the last time he had to audition for something.

If you’re not familiar with Disney’s Pete’s Dragon remake, director David Lowery’s fantastic family film tells the story of an orphaned boy named Pete (Oakes Fegley) and his best friend Elliott, who happens to be a dragon. When a forest ranger (Bryce Dallas Howard) comes across a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home, who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon, she turns to her father (Robert Redford) for help in determining where Pete came from and the truth about this dragon. The film also stars Karl Urban, Wes BentleyOona Laurence, Craig Hall, and Isiah Whitlock Jr.

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.
