If you're into animated movies about adorable anthropomorphic animals with ambition, you're having a hell of a year. We had fluffballs seeking reality TV stardom in Sing, snugglepuffs on a cross-metropolitan voyage home in The Secret Life of Pets, and of course an adorable little bunny who dreamed of becoming an officer in the crown jewel Zootopia. Now, we've got a look at Rock Dog, the tale of a pooch who's on a predetermined path to becoming a guard dog when a radio literally falls into his hands, fueling the fire of his passion for music and the self-realization that he doesn't want to be a good boy, he wants to rock.

The trailer looks sweet and harmless, if not necessarily dazzling. I'll admit, I'm an easy target for a film like this since I will watch cute little animals do just about anything, but the rock-n-roll based premise leaves plenty of ground for a family film that can play for kids and adults, although they really seem to be pushing this Fleetwood Yak gag, so hopefully there's a bit more to offer.

Directed by Ash Brannon (Toy Story 2) from a script he co-penned with Kurt Voelker, Rock Dog arrives in theater February 24, 2017 and boasts a first-rate voice cast line-up including JK Simmons, Luke Wilson, Eddie Izzard, Lewis Black, Kenan Thompson, Mae Whitman, Jorge Garcia, Matt Dillon, and Sam Elliot. Watch the first trailer below.

Here's the official Rock Dog synopsis:
