After playing a barman in 1988’s Cocktail, Tom Cruise may again shake some beverages. Deadline reports New Line has offered him a supporting role in the big screen version of the Broadway hit musical Rock of Ages. The story takes place 1987 on the Sunset Strip: "a small town girl met a big city rocker and in LA’s most famous rock club, they fell in love to the greatest songs of the 80s."

The actor either wants to pursue a dream of performing in a musical or reclaim his dwindling career, stuck somewhere between the 80s and 90s. And what better way than to sing the hit tunes of his youth and stir up some nostalgia?  In Cocktail, he sang along and danced to the Robert Palmer classic "Addicted to Love," but can he really carry a tune or will he benefit from engineering magic? Tom Cruise has belted it out on quite a few occasions. Find out where after the jump.

In Top Gun, he hits quite a few false notes when he serenades Kelly McGillis with the Righteous Brothers’ "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'." But the scene is so romantic that no one noticed or cared. And as he will soon reprise his role as Maverick in Top Gun 2, he might as well throw in some singing, too.

He pours heart and soul in his rendition of Tom Petty’s "Free Fallin’" as he races down the highway in Jerry Maguire.

Last May, he joined the Black Eyed Peas on stage in London and was dubbed as a groupie almost overnight by tabloids worldwide.

And who can ever forget a Wayfarer-wearing underwear-clad young Cruise lip-synching to Bob Seger’s "Old Time Rock and Roll" in Risky Business? He embodied the Tom Cruise we all came to know: charismatic, with that twinkle in his eye and million-dollar smile and. Given his popularity decline in recent years, maybe some risky business is just what he needs.

In the meantime, Cruise is filming the fourth installment of Mission: Impossible 4, due for release on December 16, 2011.
