The last attempt to bring Rocky & Bullwinkle to the screen, 2000's live-action adaptation starring Jason Alexander, Rene Russo, and Robert De Niro, was disastrous to say the least.  According to Variety, DreamWorks Animation will be bringing the flying squirrel and his moose friend back to their animated roots with an animated short film.  June Foray, who originated the voice of Rocket J. Squirrel in the 1959 TV series, will return and be joined by SpongeBob SquarePants voice actor Tom Kenny (the original voice of Bullwinkle Moose, Bill Scott, died in 1985).  It's exciting news until you learn that The Pacifier and Night at the Museum writers Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant are handling the script.

There's no word if the short film will be ready in time to coincide with the release of DreamWorks Animation's Mr. Peabody & Sherman, which opens March 7, 2014.  In a fun side note, Mr. Peabody & Sherman was the short inside the Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoons in the original series.
