With news that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is officially getting a release in China, an incredibly lucrative film market, Lucasfilm has now unveiled a Chinese trailer for the Star Wars spinoff. The movie is now just over a week away so we’ve already seen a number of trailers and TV spots, but this Chinese trailer is actually pretty great. It explains the story very succinctly: Felicity Jones is a “rebel” who’s tapped to assemble a ragtag team of spies, saboteurs, and assassins to steal the plans for the Death Star. Why? Because her father, played by Mads Mikkelsen, sent the encoded Imperial Message that revealed the Death Star’s existence in the first place.

While Rogue One has certainly had its share of production troubles, including reshoots that saw Michael Clayton filmmaker Tony Gilroy contributing heavily both in script form and reportedly second-unit directing, I remain optimistic about Rogue One. Gareth Edwards is an impeccably talented filmmaker, he’s got a terrific cinematographer in Greig Fraser, and the nature of this “spinoff” means they don’t have to set up further sequels—they can tell a full, worthwhile, close-ended story with Rogue One. That’s a mighty exciting prospect, and a rarity in the Hollywood blockbuster realm.

Check out the new Chinese trailer below. The film also stars Ben Mendelsohn, Diego Luna, Donnie Yen, Forest Whitaker, Alan Tudyk, Wen Jiang, and Riz Ahmed. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in theaters on December 16th.
