Disney has released a new Rogue One: A Star Wars Story TV spot. For those unfamiliar with Rogue One, the story takes place before the events of A New Hope and centers on a group of rebels who are sent to retrieve the plans for the Death Star. They are led by Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) whose father (Mads Mikkelsen) was forced by the Empire to build the destructive space station.

This TV spot includes some brief snippets of new footage, and it will be interesting to see how much of the film Disney is willing to show before it’s released. I’m also curious if they’ll have the same strategy as last year when they had a press junket for The Force Awakens without showing the movie to the journalists in attendance. At the time, we assumed that this decision was part of J.J. Abrams’ desire to keep everything shrouded in secrecy (I guess he didn’t want people to know he had basically remade A New Hope), but I was hoping Disney would take a different tack for Rogue One since you can have a richer discussion with the filmmakers and cast when the interviewer has actually seen the movie.

Check out the Rogue One featurette below. The film opens December 16th and also stars Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, and Forest Whitaker.

Here’s the official Rogue One synopsis:

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, with Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel are producing, with John Knoll and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers. “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” opens in U.S. theaters on December 16, 2016.
