Just this morning, Good Morning America premiered the first teaser trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Gareth Edwards‘ hugely anticipated take on a galaxy far, far away, which revisits the first attempt to infiltrate the Death Star. There is a good amount of information packed into the trailer, which runs around 90 seconds or so, from getting our first sense of Felicity Jones‘ Jyn Erso (still don’t know about the spelling) to that amazing shot of the Death Star closing its primary circular hatch where the weapon charges to that great action scene with our heroes dodging AT-AT fire. We also got our first clear looks at Jiang Wen and Donnie Yen‘s characters, as well as a remarkable shot of Ben Mendelsohn‘s villain in his white cloak-uniform. And what was with that scene with the cloaked figure – the Emperor? – walking into the room with the Red Guards?
The film focuses on occurrences that are alluded to in the original trilogy, but just as important as its place in the Star Wars canon is its place in the blooming career of Edwards, one of the most audacious big-studio filmmakers to come around in some time. The filmmaker’s debut, Monsters, was so incredibly inventive and visually stunning that it alone got him the job of directing Godzilla, easily one of the most brilliant blockbusters to ever be put on the big screen. And from everything we’ve seen of Rogue One, he’s looking to push his art even further with this project.
I’m sure you have as many questions as I do about how all of this will ultimately fit into the narrative, and if I was impatient to see the movie beforehand, I’m not tapping my figure on my desk so rapidly that there’s a groove forming. To make it easier to comb through all thats going on, we grabbed over 50 shots from the trailer for you to peruse at your leisure right below, and also included the handful of official high-res photos that were released this morning along with the trailer.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story lands in theaters nationwide on December 16th.
