The buzz out of SXSW for both James Wan’s Furious 7 and Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck has been deafening, so it’s understandable to miss some of the anticipated indie fair that’s been getting picked up out of the festival. Chief among these is Antoine Bardo-Jacquet’s action comedy Moonwalkers, starring Ron Perlman, Rupert Grint, and Robert Sheehan. Alchemy CEO Bill Lee announced today that his imprint has acquired all North American rights to the film, with a roll-out and release planned for later this year.

Penned by Death at a Funeral scribe Dean Crain, Moonwalkers revolves around the conspiracy theory that the Apollo 11 landing was a total fraud, a hoax dreamt up by Stanley Kubrick and the American government. Perlman plays a CIA agent trying to track down Kubrick in 1960s London, but who must ultimately pair up with a down and out rock-band manager (Grint) to create the conspiracy. During the announcement, Lee referred to Bardo-Jacquet’s film as “a wildly imaginative, one-of-a-kind action movie.”

Grégoire Melin, the film’s co-producer, added that, “We’re incredibly proud to have made such an original film from one of France’s future grand talents.” The announcement from Lee comes right ahead of Alchemy’s release of David Zellner’s Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter, the acclaimed dark drama starring Rinko Kikuchi as a woman obsessed with the Coen brothers’ Fargo. As for Perlman, the Hellboy star just finished up a guest role on The Blacklist, and recently wrapped shooting on Roland Emmerich’s Stonewall, which will tentatively see release Fall-Winter 2015.
