A widely-considered lost Kubrick script entitled Lunatic at Large is moving forward and now has Iron Man 2 co-stars Sam Rockwell and Scarlett Johansson attached.  The writer/director of some of the greatest movies ever made (2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, etc.) is not letting a little thing like being dead keep him out of the movie biz.  According to The Playlist, the script for Lunatic was found buried among Kubrick's archive of stuff, after the director's death in 1999.  The screenplay, based on a treatment by pulp-writer Jim Thompson who also wrote Kubrick's 1957 film Paths of Glory was then passed to Stephen Clarke who completed the script.

The script isn't a new discovery, though, and story details were published in the New York Times back in 2006. Hit the jump for more.

The NY Times article says that:

"It's a dark and surprising mystery of sorts, in which the greatest puzzle is who, among several plausible candidates, is the true escapee from a nearby mental hospital."

Speaking personally for a moment, I love crazy characters in Kubrick movies so the idea of a movie that could be literally filled with them is simply awesome.

And goes on to mention what is apparently the iconic scene, saying:

"The great set piece is a nighttime carnival sequence in which Joyce, lost and afraid, wanders among the tents and encounters a sideshow's worth of familiar carnie types: the Alligator Man, the Mule-Faced Woman, the Midget Monkey Girl, the Human Blockhead, with the inevitable noggin full of nails."

Thankfully, the folks in charge of the script have "resisted the temptation to update it" instead considering the script to be a period piece.  For the moment, however, no one seems quite sure of who is going to take the monumental task of directing Lunatic. In 2006, Chris Palmer, who has yet to make his directorial debut, was attached to the project, but it's not certain that he's still in that position.

There's no word on what characters Rockwell or Johansson will be playing, but it's a safe bet that Scarlett won't be playing the Midget Monkey Girl.  But if she does, it will be at least the third hottest midget monkey/human hybrid in film history.
