One of the standout moments from Sunday’s Emmy Awards show was Sarah Paulson. Dressed in a green sequin dress, the actress won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her performance of Marcia Clark in American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson. But in addition to her stirring speech praising the real woman behind her character, Paulson paid further tribute to Clark by engraving her name on her Emmys statuette.

Paulson joined her fellow Emmy winners inside the winners circle where they all were to get their names engraved on their awards, but she snuck in Clark, as well. According to The L.A. Times, the actress asked security to let her guest through, and before long the two women were oggling the statuette touting both their names.

During the real O.J. Simpson murder trial, Johnnie Cochran called Clark “hysterical,” tabloids editorialized her custody battle with her ex-husband over her children, and Lance Ito dinged her to the jury over her clothes — to name a few examples of what she had to endure.

As Paulson took the stage to accept her Emmy, she was nearly brought to tears as she offered an apology to Clark in the audience. She said:

The responsibility of playing a real person is an enormous one. You want to get it right, not for you, but for them. The more I learned about the real Marcia Clark — not the two-dimensional, cardboard cut-out that I saw on the news, but the complicated, whip-smart, giant-hearted mother of two who woke up every day, put both feet on the floor, and dedicating herself to righting an unconscionable wrong, the loss of two innocents, Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown — the more I had to recognize that I, along with the rest of the world, had been superficial and careless in my judgment. And I am glad to be able able to stand here in front of everyone today and say, I’m sorry.
