It's been a downright rough summer at the movies, with tentpole after tentpole bombing with critics and audiences alike. But there have a been a few oddball delights along the way like Shane Black's The Nice Guys and The Lonely Island's Popstar. I'm hoping that trend of offbeat, original films will continue with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's Sausage Party, the first R-rated CG-animated film, which follows Rogen's heroic sausage when he ventures beyond the walls of the grocery store after learning about the violent ends awaiting himself and his fellow foodstuffs.

So far, the promo material have sort of alternated between two comedic modes -- crass, barely-veiled double entendre and grotesque gallows humor as the various food group are explicitly prepared for human consumption. And with novelty of its concept behind it, that would be enough to make Sausage Party a goofy, immature laugh-fest, but with Rogen and Goldberg at the helm, it's a safe bet that the film will have a little more to it than a constant stream of dick jokes. And if not, hey, dick jokes are funny too.

Check out the new Sausage Party extended TV spot below. The film opens August 12th and also features the voices of Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader,Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd,Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz, Edward Norton, and Salma Hayek.
