Though Martin Scorsese almost certainly hasn't yet picked out who will play Ol' Blue Eyes in his upcoming Sinatra biopic, he did drop some seriously big names in a recent interview that's certain to increase the already rather high speculation. According to Shortlist [via The Playlist] about actors he'd like to work with:

"Johnny Depp is one. I like him. He’s unique. I don’t know how he does it. George Clooney. Brad Pitt's interesting. And Tobey Maguire. There’s a lot of good people."

That certainly does seem like simply a dropping of all the big names he could think of, but imagine just how good his biopic could be if he were to somehow snag all those guys and make them part of his rat pack. If I had a vote, though no one's asked me yet, I'd say James Franco would be the ideal choice to play Frank Sinatra himself. What say you? Though Scorsese issued that wish list of actors he'd like to work with, he made clear that was not specifically for his Sinatra flick, which is still in the early development phases.

"We’re still working on the Sinatra script," he said. "It’s very hard because here is a man who changed the entire image of the Italian-American. And that’s just one thing. Along with his political work, civil rights, the Mob ..."

He did, however, seem to have an idea of what he wants it to at least feel like, citing two of his hits as inspiration.

"I was hoping it would be a combination of the two [The Aviator and Goodfellas]. Yeah, because in structure I’d like it to be more like GoodFellas. But like The Aviator, it only deals with certain times in his life. We can’t go through the greatest hits of Sinatra’s life. We tried this already. Just can’t do it. So the other way to go is to have three or four different Sinatras. Younger. Older. Middle-aged. Very old. You cut back and forth in time – and you do it through the music. See what I’m saying? So that’s what we’re trying for. It’s very tricky [laughs]."

So, multiple Sinatras? Expect the speculation to hit fever pitch now. But how long might we have to wait to see the actual Sinatra movie? Quite a while.

Scorsese's next movie will be The Invention of Hugo Cabret, based on the children's book by Brian Selznick. It's about a young boy who lives in the walls of a Paris train station and eventually encounters Georges Melies and his fabulous automatons. After that will likely be either Silence, about Jesuit priests in China, or The Irishman, a mob pic with Robert De Niro. So, Sinatra? Probably not until 2012 at the earliest, but feel free, of course, to let us know right now who you think would be perfect for the big role.
