Good movie-based video games are few and far between, but with Ubisoft's Scott Pilgrim vs. The World we may be due up for another success this August (although technically, it's a comic book-based video game).  Game Informer got some hands-on time with the game along with some screenshots from the upcoming side-scrolling brawler (e.g. Streets of Rage, River City Ransom).  According to GI, you'll start off with Scott, Ramona Flowers, Kim Pine, and Stephen Stills as playable characters but Ubisoft hinted at unlockable characters, modes, and levels.

The game design has your standard "beat-em-up to move forward" mechanics, but there's also experience points that will grant you new moves and cash to purchase items, upgrades, and boosts to various attributes.  This sounds awesomely reminiscent of River City Ransom and more recently Castle Crashers.  Strangely, there's no online play.  Also, it will be a PlayStation Network exclusive with an Xbox Live Arcade release date TBA.  That seems to benefit PlayStation more than it does Ubisoft or Universal's promotion of the movie, which will also be released this August.

Game Informer says that the game sticks close to the narrative of the books with the levels running parallel to the volumes of the graphic novels.  So in the build they played, World 3 takes place inside the club where Sex Bob-omb faces off against The Clash at Demonhead like in Volume 3, Scott Pilgrim & the Infinite Sadness.

The game sounds kinda, sorta amazing and that's important when the source material and the movie have so many video game tropes.  It would be kind of sad if the video game itself turned out to be weak sauce.  Thankfully, it looks like that won't be the case.
