STX Entertainment has released a new trailer for the upcoming thriller Secret in Their Eyes. Based on the 2009 Argentine film of the same name, the movie stars Julia Roberts and Chiwetel Ejiofor as FBI agents Jess and Ray, respectively, whose lives are turned upside down when Jess’ daughter is found murdered, for seemingly no reason. Years later, their inability to bring the killer to justice still haunts Ray—until he finds a new lead that may prove integral to catching the murderer and giving his colleague (and himself) some peace.
The dramatic thriller is the third directorial effort from Billy Ray, who previously wrote and helmed Shattered Glass and Breach but is best known for penning the screenplays for films like The Hunger Games and Captain Phillips. I’ve not seen the original Secret in Their Eyes so I can only speak to Ray’s iteration, but the film looks to be a solid thriller with an intense character focus. Roberts, Ejiofor, and co-star Nicole Kidman are all extremely talented, so I’m eager to see them shine with this kind of material.
Check out the trailer (via Yahoo!) and some new images (via STX Entertainment) below. The film opens in theaters on October 23rd.
Here’s the official synopsis for Secret in Their Eyes:
Written and directed by Academy Award® nominee Billy Ray (Captain Phillips, The Hunger Games), and produced by Academy Award® winner Mark Johnson (Rain Man, “Breaking Bad”), Secret In Their Eyes is an intense, powerful, haunting thriller starring Academy Award® nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Academy Award® winners Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts.
A tight-knit team of rising FBI investigators – Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Jess (Julia Roberts), along with their District Attorney supervisor Claire (Nicole Kidman) – is suddenly torn apart when they discover that Jess’s teenage daughter has been brutally and inexplicably murdered.
Now, thirteen years later, after obsessively searching every day for the elusive killer, Ray finally uncovers a new lead that he’s certain can permanently resolve the case, nail the vicious murderer, and bring long-desired closure to his team. No one is prepared, however, for the shocking, unspeakable secret that will reveal the enduring, destructive effects of personal vengeance on the human soul.
Interweaving past and present, this deeply layered mystery explores the murky boundaries between justice and revenge, and asks the question: how far would you go to right an unfathomable wrong?
