I’m eagerly awaiting a FreshDirect order and a new box of contact lenses, so I was a little surprised to open up a package I received this morning and find a new LG cell phone inside. The box was labeled Phoenix Biogenic and came with a card informing Mr. Nemiroff (it’s cool, I’ve got a unisex name, I’m over it) that “you are one of 200 individuals that have been pre-selected to experience a revolutionary technological singularity.”
I followed the instructions, booted up the phone and received a message directing me to the website for Phoenix Biogenic, a company involved in consciousness transfer technology. Apparently they take healthy minds and put them in new bodies that are “genetically engineered for perfection.” Right now the site’s got a brief introduction video, a bunch of images and some photos of “vessels,” but I suspect more is coming because the second instruction on that card is to “keep your phone on and wait further instruction at 8:30am PST/11:30am EST.”
The phone and the card don’t say Self/less anywhere on them, but a little Googling does reveal that Matthew Goode is playing a character named Albright in the upcoming Tarsem Singh film and that’s the name signed at the bottom of the instruction card. The film also stars Ryan Reynolds and Ben Kingsley. Here’s the official description:
An extremely wealthy, elderly man dying from cancer undergoes a radical medical procedure that transfers his consciousness to the body of a healthy young man but everything may not be as good as it seems when he starts to uncover the mystery of the body’s origins and the secret organization that will kill to keep its secrets.
You can check out the Phoenix Biogenic welcome video, images of the phone and instruction card, and the five images that came on the phone below. I’ll be sure to let you know what happens tomorrow at 11:30am.
