Netflix Renews SENSE8 for Season 2

     August 8, 2015

Fresh off the news that HBO won’t even give a new David Fincher series a first season, Netflix has officially ordered a second season of the ambitious sci-fi drama series Sense8. Created and executive produced by Lana and Andy Wachowski and J. Michael Straczynski, the series tells the story of eight people connected around the world who, after experiencing a violent vision, are able to see, feel, hear, and talk to each other as if they are in the same place. While they are being hunted by an organization that is out to do them harm, these eight individuals from diverse backgrounds must quickly adapt to this new ability and to each other, and figure out what their connection means for the future of humanity.

The show is certainly ambitious (though we expect nothing less from the Wachowski siblings), and while early reviews were lukewarm, often citing confusion over the show’s convoluted plot structure, I’ve heard from quite a few folks recently that the series ends on a strong—and highly emotional—note. While Netflix almost always grants its original shows second seasons, it wasn’t necessarily a given for Sense8 since this is considerably more niche than, say, House of Cards. Regardless, it’s nice to see the streaming service staying devoted to a diverse library of original content.

The Wachowskis directed most of the show’s first season in addition to writing every episode with Straczynski, and while there’s been no confirmation as such, I imagine they’ll assume the same roles in Season 2. Cloud Atlas was fantastic and Jupiter Ascending was a huge disappointment, but neither film made much of an impression at the box office, so it’s unclear how soon they might return to the feature film world.
