Shawn Levy to Produce SESAME STREET Movie for Fox

     June 19, 2012

Just the other day we mentioned that producer/director Shawn Levy (Real Steel) had added another project to his plate; it looks like he’ll be doubling that order with the addition of a Sesame Street feature.  20th Century Fox recently picked up the rights to the long-running educational kids program for Levy to produce through his 21 Laps banner.  Since it’s debut in 1969, Sesame Street has hauled in 138 Emmys.  More importantly, it’s created iconic and educational characters like Big Bird, Bert and Ernie and Oscar the Grouch, who are recognized all around the world by children of all ages.  But this won’t be the first time for Big Bird to be on the big screen.  Hit the jump for more on the Sesame Street feature film.

Heat Vision reports that sesame-street-charactersLevy is attached to produce the Sesame Street movie, likely in step with Sesame Workshop (formerly Children’s Television Workshop).  The famous puppets have left their PBS address twice before: once in 1985 with Follow That Bird, a Warner Bros. production featuring John Candy, Chevy Chase and Dave Thomas alongside the Sesame Street residents; and again in 1999 with Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland. Other famous Jim Henson creations, The Muppets, have had quite the successful run in feature films, notably with last year’s iteration and the planned sequel.  It’s shaping up to be quite a haul for the Henson estate as even the lowly-yet-lovable Fraggles from Fraggle Rock are looking to get into the big picture business.  Now you can feel a bit better about spending all that time and money earning your degree from puppetry school.  So, which one of the puppet pictures are you looking forward to most: The Muppets sequel, Sesame Street or Fraggle Rock? Let us know in the comments below!
