MTV unveiled a new trailer for its fantasy series The Shannara Chronicles at New York Comic-Con yesterday, and it’s now online for all to enjoy. Based on the beloved book series by author Terry Brooks, the TV show takes place thousands of years after the destruction of our civilization and revolves around an Elven Princess, a half-human half-elf, and a human who embark on a quest to prevent a demon army from destroying their world.
I continue to be impressed by the sheer scale of storytelling on display in this MTV series. While plenty of networks began developing their own fantasy-tinged TV shows in the wake of Game of Thrones, few really put the kind of budget behind them that effectively brings another world to life. Shannara Chronicles looks to do just that, as this trailer is filled with expansive VFX shots and creatures galore. Moreover, it looks like there’s no half-assed attempt to make the series “more palatable” by infusing it with something more grounded. This is full-on fantasy and it doesn’t care who knows it. Is MTV on the cusp of having the “next big thing” original series? Hey, stranger things have happened in the New Golden Age of Television.
Check out the new trailer below (via MTV) followed by some new images, and click here for 15 things we learned about the TV series at San Diego Comic-Con. With a pilot directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans), The Shannara Chronicles premieres in January 2016 on MTV and stars Poppy Drayton, Austin Butler, Ivana Baquero, Manu Bennett, and John Rhys-Davies.
