Sony Pictures Animation’s Smurfs franchise is going with all-computer-generated animation in the new movie Smurfs: The Lost Village. Directed by Kelly Asbury (Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Shrek 2, Gnomeo and Juliet), the newest Smurfs movie was previously teased in the film’s first trailer, but today a new trailer takes the tale of the pint-sized title heroes even further.
There are a few nods to the classic Smurfs mythology throughout this trailer–the familiar characters, the fact that every Smurf is a dude except for Smurfette, and even a cute little joke about Smurfs being “three apples tall”–but it looks like this new film wants to widen the miniature world even further. The film’s synopsis teases “the biggest secret in Smurf history” and as you can briefly glimpse in this new trailer, it looks like the title location of the Lost Village will house an entirely new group of Smurf-like characters. Perhaps Smurfette will not longer be the lone female Smurf; perhaps the entire village is populated only by female Smurfs! We’ll have to wait until April to find out, but in the meantime, enjoy the new trailer below along with a new look at the fully animated Smurfs, Gargamel, and Azrael.
Starring Demi Lovato as Smurfette. Mandy Patinkin as Papa Smurf, Rainn Wilson as Gargamel, Joe Manganiello as Hefty, Danny Pudi as Brainy Smurf and Jack McBrayer as Clumsy Smurf, Smurfs: The Lost Village opens in theaters April 7, 2017.
