Open Road has released the first Snowden image online. Oliver Stone's upcoming film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, and it also features an outstanding supporting cast that includes Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Timothy Olyphant, Rhys Ifans, Joely Richardson, and Nicolas Cage. While we all know Snowden from his video interviews, this image gives us a look back at his time in the military.

I have plenty of concerns about Snowden, and this image highlights one of them: hero worship. Whether you agree or disagree with Snowden's actions, it's important to show him as a multidimensional figure. One of my biggest issues with Citizenfour is that it unquestioningly celebrates Snowden's actions, which turns discussion away from a central figure and into a conversation we could have had without seeing the film in the first place. Citizenfour and perhaps Snowden provide details, but I'm not sure if they'll provide any depth.
