It’s officially official: Space Jam 2 is happening. The long-discussed basketball-centric sequel has been set for release on July 16, 2021, staking out a big summer release date for the film. LeBron James is set to star, just as Michael Jordan led the first movie, and Black Panther filmmaker Ryan Coogler is onboard as a producer with Terence Nance (Random Acts of Flynes) in the director’s chair.

It’s unclear what the plot of Space Jam 2 will be, but one imagines it involves basketball and cartoon characters. Interestingly enough, Lola Bunny gets top billing over Bugs Bunny on this promo poster, so perhaps she has a larger role in the follow-up. The first film really hinged on the audience’s awareness of Michael Jordan’s career, as it revolved around the Looney Tunes characters luring Jordan away from his ill-fated baseball career and back to basketball.

Look, I grew up in the 90s. Obviously I loved Space Jam, and that soundtrack is still a classic. But I’m not going to pretend like Space Jam is a great movie, or even a good one. So I’m curious to see what Space Jam 2 actually is. Will it be marketed towards kids? Will kids even show up to a movie starring Looney Tunes characters anymore? Is LeBron’s name enough to get butts in seats? Coogler's involvement is promising, but there are a lot of questions, and I suppose we’ll get our answers in two years.

In other release date news, Warner Bros. has shifted the release date of Godzilla vs. Kong out of its May 22, 2020 weekend into a less-crowded March 13, 2020 date. That puts it up against an untitled Blumhouse project and the Gambit movie, although there’s far from a guarantee that Gambit will even happen anymore after the Disney-Fox deal goes through. The reason for the change is Fast & Furious 9, which Universal just plopped down for release on May 22, 2020. Judging by that franchise’s performance at the box office, you do not want to bet against it.

Godzilla vs. Kong sees Adam Wingard (Death Note) stepping into the director’s chair as the titular monsters come head to head. Alexander Skarsgard is in the lead, but crossover actors include Godzilla: King of the Monsters actors Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler.
