Ever since Marvel and Sony defied all expectations by announcing that Spider-Man would crossover into the MCU proper, rampant speculation has been the name of the game regarding the when, where and how Tom Holland's web-slinging superhero will make his debut.

The most popular theory has always been that Spidey would turn up in Captain America: Civil War, given that the character plays a critical role in the arc of the comic series the film is based on. Now, it seems we may finally have our confirmation thanks to Robert Downey Jr., and the folks over at EW, who at the very least, saw a very good Spider-Man cosplayer on the set.

While speaking with the outlet, Downey Jr. expressed his ecxitement to see so many new superheroes showing up in the Marvel world, including the name drop everyone's been waiting for.

“[Don] Cheadle and I are just going, ‘Wow, dude, look at this.’ We’re now like the old guard, and our storyline carries real weight just because of our history in the [canon]. But we’re also looking around like, ‘Who thought that Falcon and Black Panther and Ant-Man and now Spider-Man…?’ I mean it’s like wow, this thing is just crazy.”

While that all but makes it a lock that Spider-Man will indeed pop up in Civil War, Chris Evans was a bit more guarded about the possibility.

“You never know with Marvel...Sometimes they shoot things and then don’t use them.”

Now that's some good PR game, if they shot a major battle sequence with him like Downey Jr. is describing, I find it very hard to believe a scene of that magnitude would end up on the cutting room floor.

The article also offered some insight on a few other mysterious characters that are set to appear in the film, including Martin Freeman, who plays an as yet unknown government employee, and Daniel Bruhl's villainous Baron Zemo. As Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige explained,

“There are a lot of amazing actors in this movie.  Some of them play larger roles than others.  And in some cases there are some you will meet ever so briefly in this film and then will be expanded upon in future films. He falls into that latter category.”
