We have a fresh casting rumor for the Spider-Man reboot, though it was mostly gleaned from a Twitter conversation in which the source is "Tommy said...", so feel entitled to your skepticism.  Someone congratulated actor Chris Zylka (10 Things I Hate About You) for scoring a role in "Spiderman 4"; Zylka responded "thank you."  Simple enough.

If cast, Zylka would join headliner Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors (aka The Lizard), Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, Sally Field as Aunt May, and Denis Leary as George Stacy.  The rumor mill suggests that Zylka will play Eugene "Flash" Thompson; hit the jump for some background info on the character.

Comic Book Movie is the source of the casting tip, but for now, treat it as a rumor on top of a rumor.  Here's a brief bio for the Flash Thompson:

Handsome and naturally athletic, young Eugene Thompson seemed to have a bright future ahead of him, but hidden darkness in his family set the stage for what became a life of wasted potential. His father, popular policeman Harrison Thompson, had a secret drinking problem, and it was all the Thompson family could do to hold him together at times. Alternating between anger and despair, the self-loathing Harrison took out his frustrations on his family, often treating Eugene abusively. Eugene, in turn, became a neighborhood bully, taking out his own frustrations on weaker and less popular children. One of his earliest and longest-running targets was Peter Parker, a bookish boy who later became the masked adventurer Spider-Man... Shortly after Spider-Man first appeared, Flash declared himself the wall-crawler's biggest fan, never dreaming that his hero was the same "Puny Parker" he so often tormented. [Marvel]

The still-untitled Spider-Man reboot hits theaters July 3, 2012.
