When it comes to comic book movies, the look of the superheroes and villains (and their costumes) draws every bit as much attention as the actors, plots, and Easter eggs. Supersuits have evolved over the decades on both the big and small screens with very few being reused from season to season or feature to feature. Filmmakers and showrunners alike keep things fresh with new costumes that pay homage to classic comic book looks, whether it’s Batman’s power armor in Batman v Superman, the nod to classic X-Men costumes in X-Men: Apocalypse, or even the various speedsuits put on display in The Flash.
So with Jon Watts‘ Spider-Man: Homecoming drawing all sorts of attention ahead of its release next summer, any little costume tweak is going to finds itself the subject of scrutiny, especially when that tweak is the web-slinger’s iconic web wings. At Comic Con Experience 2016 in Brazil, a short clip from the film teased an upgrade to the suit that includes the under-the-arm web wings; read on to find out more about them.
Starring Tom Holland who is reprising his role from Captain America: Civil War, Michael Keaton as Vulture, Zendaya as Michelle, Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark / Iron Man, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, and Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, plus Donald Glover, Spider-Man: Homecoming is scheduled for theaters on July 7, 2017.
Here’s a description of the footage from our friends at Omelete:
The scene begins with the camera in first person, as the vision of Peter Parker. We see Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), who asks the young man to hurry. “What is this?” Asks Hogan. “It’s my suit,” Parker replies. We see only the sleeves of the uniform and the web-shooters. “You did not get the package?” Hogan asks. Parker then finds a package on the table with a note from Tony Stark: “some minor upgrades”.
The next scene shows Spider-Man on top of an building. When he jumps, small wings similar to the drawings of Steve Ditko and John Romita appear. The “wings” range from the waist to the middle of the arm and maintain the blend of retro and technological of the uniform seen in Captain America: Civil War.
We’ve got double confirmation of Spidey’s new web-wings from Marvel’s own Ryan Penagos who tweeted out his reaction to the footage:
There’s a case from Tony Stark with an “upgrade” for Spidey. Then we see Spidey leap off a building, open his arms, web wings! #ccxp2016 2/?
