Back in 2011, when it was announced that Sony would be bringing The Amazing Spider-Man to the big screens, Community star Donald Glover embraced a grassroots social media campaign started by his fans called Donald4Spiderman with an eye toward landing the coveted title role. Clearly that didn’t work out, but in an interesting twist, Glover’s spider-passion may have laid the
web groundwork for a role in the new film, Spider-Man: Homecoming.
THR reports that Glover is in talks for the Jon Watts-directed film, though his role remains a mysterious one. It’s safe to say that he won’t be stepping into Spidey’s Underoos (at least not the suit crafted by Tony Stark, anyway) since that role has been firmly locked down by Tom Holland. Perhaps Holland’s debut appearance as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War made its way into the wider fictional world and influenced some copycats or super-fans, with Glover being among them.
As for the cast and characters of Spider-Man: Homecoming we do know, Michael Keaton is in talks to play the film’s villain, Marisa Tomei would reprise her Cap role as Aunt May, along with Robert Downey Jr. sidling up next to her as Stark. As for the friends of Holland’s Peter Parker, Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel) will play Manuel and Zendaya will be playing the female lead named Michelle; Laura Harrier (One Life to Live) has also been cast in an unspecified role. Look for the movie to head into production later this month.
Do you think Glover will be playing a familiar character from the Spider-verse, or some wholly new creation befitting his personality? Let us know in the comments below!
