Now that we’ve pretty much exhausted the primary characters in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it’s time to move on to the lesser-known figures. If the film is a success, they’ll develop their own cult following. They’ll get lovingly name-dropped alongside Figrin D’an, Lobot, and IG-88. If The Force Awakens is a failure, they’ll be relegated to the waste bin of Star Wars lore with Watto, Sebulba, and every Galactic Separatist.

So what fate awaits new character Constable Zuvio? Empire has revealed the first official image the alien, who is described by Lucasfilm as “tough and humorless” and a “vigilant law officer on a mostly lawless world” who “keeps order in a frontier trading post”. So presumably he works on Jakku (judging by the desert background in the image) and is probably at odds with Rey (Daisy Ridley), who survives by scavenging the wrecks of starships.

Those are all the details we really have, but hopefully Zuvio is a sign of the much bigger world we’ll see when The Force Awakens comes along. While the plot and central characters are obviously important, what has made Star Wars stand the test of time is that it’s a big universe, but it only feels big if every detail feels realized. That’s not to say that Zuvio needs a rich backstory or we need a complete biography, but he should help add to the richness of the narrative. Also, if he turns out not to be an outrageously offensive stereotype like Watto or Nute Gunray, that would be fantastic.
