When the early ticket sales for Star Wars: The Force Awakens became available even earlier than expected last night, movie theater websites quickly crashed as Internet traffic overwhelmed their servers. So even though one could only imagine what sorts of numbers they would have seen had their systems been up to the task, the pre-sale is already breaking records well before the December 18th release date. That's thanks in large part to the excellent yet still mysterious trailer released by Disney and Lucasfilm last night.

As THR reports, Star Wars: The Force Awakens absolutely blew the previous record-holder for pre-sale tickets out of the water, as far as Fandango sales are concerned. The original film The Hunger Games held that record up until last night. Though there are no hard numbers available at the moment, apparently J.J. Abrams' Force-filled seventh installment brought in eight times the number of tickets as The Hunger Games. That's pretty impressive, though it'd be nice to get some actual, factual figures.

What's more interesting is that so many people are clamoring for their first look at a film that's been relatively shrouded in secrecy, at least as far as its actual plot and characters are concerned. We don't even have an official synopsis to go with the recently released trailer, which, by the way, will be the last one you see until the film's December 18th release date. In an era when studios are pushing trailers and teasers and TV spots and featurettes and product placements (and make no mistake, Disney is doing these, too, just on the periphery of Star Wars: The Force Awakens' actual plotlines), the biggest buzz is over a film that general audiences know next to nothing about. Go figure.
