Last week, Lucasfilm revealed a chunk of the Star Wars Celebration Europe schedule, including a Rogue One panel featuring director Gareth Edwards. As it turns out, he won’t be the only Star Wars filmmaker in attendance. As announced today, Star Wars: Episode VIII director Rian Johnson and the directing duo behind the Han Solo anthology film, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, will be featured in a separate panel.
Pablo Hidalgo from Lucasfilm’s story group will host a discussion with Lucasfilm’s president Kathleen Kennedy and senior vice president of development Kiri Hart, as well as the trio of the Future Filmmaker Discussion, the panel will take place on Sunday, July 17 at Celebration Stage. StarWars.com further teases “some surprises” to “end the weekend on a high note.”
Johnson has been busy filming Episode VIII with a cast that includes Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. By now he has enough material to show something off if Lucasfilm decides to do so.
Elsewhere, Lord and Miller, who teamed on The LEGO Movie and 22 Jump Street, haven’t started filming their anthology film, but Hail, Caesar! actor Alden Ehrenreich has scored the coveted role of young Han Solo. All they’d have to do is roll him out on stage and he’d be golden.
It’ll be interesting to see what Lucasfilm shows those at Star Wars Celebration Europe this year. Last year, J.J. Abrams and the cast of Star Wars: The Force Awakens did have a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, but they held their bigger releases for Star Wars Celebration at Anaheim, as well as the D23 Expo. The latter won’t feature at the Anaheim convention space in California, so they may decide to come out with a larger presence at Comic-Con. It would also give fans a better idea of what to expect from these gatherings moving ahead.
