The concept art stage is fascinating because the staff in pre-production is letting their imaginations overflow while the director is usually still settling on his or her vision for the film. The downside is much of the concept art ends up getting discarded or refashioned into something else, and the original design is lost along the way.
Thankfully, ILM held on to the work they did on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and they’ve shared it online. Some of this stuff is very cool like the the various masks for Kylo Ren, some X-Wing/Tie-Fighter hybrids for the First Order, a bearded Han Solo, and much more. While I’m sure we’ll always have a steady stream of this material in one fashion or another, whether it be books, Blu-rays, etc., I’m glad it’s getting released and that we can now compare it to the finished movie without fear of being spoiled.
