We just got our first official look at Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc), Jay Hernandez (El Diablo), Karen Fukuhara (Katana) and Adam Beach (Slipknot) in full costume posing school photo-style for a Suicide Squad promo image, but now it’s time to get a look at the gang in action on set.

Toronto’s Entertainment City (via ComingSoon) got the OK to shoot some behind-the-scenes material and have a brief chat with director David Ayer. Here’s what Ayer had to say about the film:

“I’m all about real drama, real performance and real people, so my twist on this is I’m creating a family, I’m creating a brotherhood here. I’m creating a very real chemistry and I have this incredible ensemble of actors lead by Will Smith who are basically playing dimensional characters with lives and souls.”

Dimensional characters with lives and souls? That sounds about right to me. I love a good solo superhero movie, but a big draw here is the opportunity to get to see a group of curious characters come together - and a group of antiheroes no less - so it is nice to hear Ayer highlight his goal to create a family with real chemistry.

Check out the full behind-the-scene report below and tell us what you think. Is Ayer heading in the right direction? Suicide Squad is due in theaters on August 5, 2016 and also stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jared Leto as The Joker, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Raymond Olubowale, Alex Meraz, Jim Parrack and Common.
