We got the official word that Jared Leto is The Joker, Will Smith is Deadshot, Margot Robbie is Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney is Captain Boomerang and Cara Delevinge is Enchantress in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad back in December, but the role of Rick Flag was up in the air for a few months after. Originally it was Tom Hardy’s part, but when he dropped out, the rumor mill started churning full force. First Jake Gyllenhaal was a possible replacement, then it was Joel Edgerton and Jon Bernthal, and after that, Karl Urban’s name was in the mix as well. In the end, none of them scored the gig. Instead, the part went to The Killings Joel Kinnaman.

While talk to Kinnaman for his upcoming release, Run All Night, he fielded a few questions about Suicide Squad. After noting his facial hair and asking if it’s almost time to shave it off, Kinnaman said:

“Maybe. Maybe not.”

From there he offered a little information regarding his current schedule. Right now he’s busy shooting a movie in Northern Ontario, Alejandro G. Inarritu’s The Revenant, but on the weekends, it’s off to Toronto for Suicide Squad prep. Here’s the full quote:

“Yeah, so I’m in Northern Ontario shooting this movie and then I go down to Toronto on the weekends to prepare.”

Here’s what Kinnaman had to say when asked if he’s excited about the film:

“The story’s dope and David is just, he’s cool. You know, I think you’re always afraid when you go into like a big superhero movie that it’s gonna be kinda just action and you’re not gonna be able to just really go to the bottom of the characters, but I think he’s gonna be able to do both, really give it both depth and scale. Yeah, all the conversations that we’ve had so far have been like, ‘Wow. Okay, we’re really going there.’ So that’s fun.”

Hoping to get a better sense of how much screen-time Rick Flag will get, I asked if he’s got a long schedule ahead of him. Kinnaman replied:

“Yeah, it’s long.”

Suicide Squad is due in theaters on August 5th, 2016.
