A week ago news broke that Tom Hardy dropped out of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad and that Warner Bros. was going after Jake Gyllenhaal to replace him, but, it turns out, Gyllenhaal didn’t care much for the role of Rick Flag either so the search continues.  According to Cinema Blend, now the studio has set its sights on Joel Edgerton and Jon Bernthal.

Both are quality actors, but perhaps just a little less in demand than Hardy and Gyllenhaal.  Of course we’ve got to consider their potential involvement a rumor for now, but either would make a great get if Ayer actually winds up locking one of them in.  However, between the two, I think I’d lean more towards Bernthal just because I’m eager to see more of him.  He had memorable roles in The Wolf of Wall Street and Fury, but we haven’t really see him dig into a meaty character since The Walking Dead.

Then again, if the rumors are true, Rick Flag won’t have that big of a presence in Suicide Squad.  According to that spoiler-heavy Latino Review article, it’s Will Smith’s Deadshot, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Jared Leto’s The Joker that are the key characters in the film.

In addition to the Rick Flag casting rumor, we’ve also got a report claiming that Gary Sinise is currently in talks to take the role of General Eiling in the movie.  El Mayimbe branded his own tweet an “unconfirmed Twitter rumor” and Cinema Blend followed up by adding that their own source corroborated that Sinise is getting involved, but not for the role of General Eiling or for Deathstroke either.  Cinema Blend adds that Warner Bros. may want Joe Manganiello for Deathstroke, but dubs that bit of information “unconfirmed at the moment.”

Suicide Squad is expected to go into production in April and is due in theaters on August 5, 2016, so Warner Bros. has to solidify casting details in the near future.
