It feels like we’ve been talking about Suicide Squad for a long while, but the film is finally set to be unleashed in theaters in a little over a week. However, during the development and production period of Suicide Squad, speculation ran rampant about what the movie would and wouldn’t include, and how it might connect to the overall DC Extended Universe. As the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice inched closer, one theory that simply wouldn’t die hinged on the true identity of Jared Leto’s Joker.
The theory goes that The Joker in Suicide Squad is actually Jason Todd, Batman’s former Robin who is killed by the Joker only to return as the Red Hood. This is comics lore, and Todd recently popped up in the video game Batman: Arkham Knight, so fans took this and ran with it, assuming that Leto’s character would have an intense connection to Ben Affleck’s Batman.
However, if you were a fan of this theory, I’ve got some bad news. In speaking with WSVN-TV (via THR), Suicide Squad writer/director David Ayer addressed the theory head on and succinctly shut it down by pointing to the camera and saying:
“It ain’t the case. He’s not.”
So, there you have it. The Joker is not Jason Todd in Suicide Squad. Will we find out that the villain has an identity beyond the iconic moniker? We don’t yet know, but we should find out soon enough as press screenings for Suicide Squad are getting underway imminently.
