After a couple months of negotiations and intriguing possibilities, Warner Bros. has officially confirmed its Suicide Squad movie cast, which includes Jared Leto playing a new incarnation of The Joker.  Written and directed by Fury filmmaker David Ayer, Suicide Squad revolves around a team of supervillains who work for the U.S. government, undertaking dangerous black ops missions in exchange for commuted prison sentences.  We’ve heard a number of A-list names mentioned in connection to roles in the DC Comics adaptation over the past few weeks, and somewhat surprisingly, every single one of them has panned out.  Find out who Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, and Cara Delevinge are officially playing in Suicide Squad after the jump, as well as who Warner Bros. is eyeing to the fill the film's antagonist role.

We were the first to report that The Wolf of Wall Street actress Margot Robbie was in line to play Joker pal Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, and Warner Bros. confirmed today (via Variety) that the actress will indeed be playing the villainess.  Additionally, Leto will officially follow up his Oscar-winning turn in Dallas Buyers Club by playing legendary Batman villain The Joker, filling the massive shoes of Heath Ledger’s iconic performance in 2008’s The Dark Knight.

While previous reports noted that Will Smith was possibly circling the role of Captain Boomerang, the actor will instead be playing Batman villain Deadshot (this makes more sense), a character with a penchant for sniping.  The character of Captain Boomerang, then, will be played by A Good Day to Die Hard and Jack Reacher actor Jai Courtney, while Tom Hardy will be filling the role of military expert Rick Flag, the group's leader.

And finally, Anna Karenina actress Cara Delevingne will be playing Enchantress, a supervillain with magical powers.  Delevingne is a relative newcomer but she’s poised to break out soon with roles in Pan, the John Green adaptation Paper Towns, and the comedy Tulip Fever.

Additionally, Variety adds that Warner Bros. is looking to fill the role of Amanda Waller, the character that oversees the team (she's essentially the Suicide Squad's Nick Fury).  The character was previously played by Angela Basset in Green Lantern, but the studio's top choice for the role is Oprah Winfrey, with Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer also on the shortlist of actresses being eyed.  In short, they want an Oscar nominee/winner.

So there you have it, folks; your full Suicide Squad movie cast.  There’s still no mention of Jesse Eisenberg, who was reported as being in talks to reprise his Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice role as Lex Luthor, but it’s possible it may be a small supporting role that Warner Bros. could be trying to keep quiet.  Or maybe his deal has yet to close.  Or maybe he’s just not in it.  Regardless, production on Suicide Squad is set to get underway in Toronto in April in anticipation of an August 5, 2016 release date.

Here’s what Warner Bros. exec Ben Silverman had to say about the cast, followed by the official cast/character list one more time.  Charles Roven (Man of Steel) is producing, with Zack SnyderDeborah Snyder, Colin Wilson, and Geoff Johns onboard as executive producers:

“The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote Training Day and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of longtime Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favorites: Margot, Jared, Jai and Cara. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”
