It’s Suicide Squad day, apparently! Shortly after the latest cover of Empire was unveiled, which features Jared Leto’s Joker front and center, a slew of new images from the Warner Bros. supervillain pic have landed online that are debuting inside the magazine. Directed by David Ayer, the filmmaker behind gritty pics like Fury and End of Watch, Suicide Squad offers a villainous spin on the superhero formula by focusing on the “bad guys”. This particular band of misfits is made up of imprisoned villains who are contracted by the government to go out on highly dangerous missions, most of which involve assassinations.
The team includes Deadshot (Will Smith), Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), as well as Katana (Karen Fukuhara), Slipknot (Adam Beach), and El Diablo (Jay Hernandez).
Most of these characters can be glimpsed in these new photos, along with Cara Delevigne’s Enchantress (we’re not quite sure where she fits into the story just yet) and Viola Davis‘ imposing Amanda Waller, and the main takeaway is that this movie is gonna be dark. This is actually a really big film for Warner Bros., as it marks the first DC Superhero Universe movie not featuring the main “heroes” (and also the first not directed by Zack Snyder). It’s the direct follow-up to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, bridging the gap between that film and Wonder Woman and taking place in the same universe, and I’m mighty curious to see what Ayer brings to this new corner of the DCCU.
For now, check out the photos below via Empire (via CBM) and sound off in the comments with your thoughts on what looks to be an incredibly promising film. Suicide Squad opens in theaters on August 5, 2016.
