Suicide Squad may have the strangest, most unique aesthetic of any superhero movie on the market, and isn't that just fitting for a David Ayer (Fury) helmed actioner that swaps the good guys for a roster of superpowered villains. Since it's such an odd duck, it's hard to know what to make of Suicide Squad so far. It's a writer-director driven comic book adaptation from a filmmaker known for his hypergritty tone, yet the trailers tease cheeky fun, and the marketing imagery has settled into an aesthetic that can only be described as black-light tattoo parlor chic.
It's all a bit confounding when put together, but that only makes the whole thing more exciting. In an age where blockbuster movies often give everything away in the trailer, I have genuinely no idea what to expect from Suicide Squad. Today, Ayer has debuted a new poster for the film, and it's just as unusual as ever. Blending cartoonish animation with images of the main cast in the image of a nuclear explosion and casting it all on top of that ever-present neon purple and green background, it all just screams chaos. But when you're talking about a team of deadly and insane villains turned heroes-for-hire, chaos is probably just the ticket.
Check out the new poster below. Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Jared Leto, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, Jay Hernandez,Adam Beach, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Karen Fukuhara, and Ike Barinholtz, and arrives in theaters on August 5th.
