After a successful Indiegogo campaign that hit its goal of $2 million in one day and raised over $4.5 million overall, filming has begun on Super Troopers 2. As we reported back in March, the film has distribution, so hopefully we’ll see it some time in 2016. And as for the plot, there are currently no official details on the plot, although backers who put in at least $10 got script access as one of the perks. Also, you’re not really coming to Super Troopers 2 for the plot, but for the weird, offhanded jokes that will grow overtime.

And that’s my big curiosity with the sequel. Will they play to the jokes that worked the first time around, or will they try to set up new weirdness. Broken Lizard has been hit and miss since their 2001 movie, and I’m curious if they’re going to try to appeal to fans by playing the classics (chugging syrup, “meow” game, shenanigans, etc.) or if they’ll be coming with some new jokes. I imagine it will be a mix between the two, but personally, I’d like to see something completely unexpected because that element of surprise is what made Super Troopers so enduring. It’s a film that sneaks up on you, and while you may not love it on a first viewing, it’s stays with you. It’s the “By Mennen” of movies.

Check out a Super Troopers 2 image from the first day of filming below. Hopefully, the filmmakers will keep in touch with people who didn't donate, and that's the tricky balance when you want to sell everyone, not just your crowdfunding backers.

The film stars Jay Chandrasekhar, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, Erik Stolhanske, and Kevin Heffernan.
