The first clip from the second season of Supergirl pairs up the title superhero (Melissa Benoist) with her significantly more famous cousin Superman (Tyler Hoechlin). Normally this would serve as a setup for a sort of super turf war, but in a refreshingly uplifting and heroic bit of TV magic, the caped cousins actually work together to help save the day. When's the last time we've actually seen superheroes cooperating to save people rather than merely kill the bad guy or destroy a world-ending machine? Lately it seems that we've forgotten that aspect of our most iconic heroes somewhere along the way.

But Supergirl and the show's writing team have not. This team-up was teased a week or so ago, but the new clip fully reveals the collaborating cousins in action. It's a great moment for the series, a wonderful introduction for Hoechlin, and a needed super-boost to Supergirl's mostly solo story to date. Sure, Martian Manhunter is always waiting in the wings but David Harewood's relatively more extreme transformation likely taxes the special effects budget more than the combined jumping and cape-flapping efforts of the Super-Cousins. It remains to be seen how their partnership will grow and change over the course of the season, providing a compelling reason to tune in.

Here's what executive producer Andrew Kreisberg had to say about the team-up:

“The two of them actually show up to the same crisis. It’s not a turf war, they just both heard about the same tragedy on the news and both flew into action.

"They haven’t really gotten a chance to spend time together, especially since she’s come out as Supergirl, and they both want that. Both of them have a bit of sadness about them — they both have that sense of feeling alone, they both have that sense of feeling different — and both of them remark that that loneliness, that alienation, that isolation goes away when they are together.”
