Would you believe that twenty years have passed since the very first episode of the hit paranormal series, Supernatural, was broadcast? How time flies indeed! The long-running show first aired on September 13, 2005, on The WB, where all twenty-two episodes of Season 1ended on May 4, 2006, before the drama became part of The CW’s lineup. Subsequently, after fifteen captivating seasons, Supernatural came to a somewhat satisfying end on November 19, 2020, but fans may be surprised to hear that that wasn’t the original plan for the final seasons, according to Andrew Dabb, who served as showrunner for those seasons.
One of those plans involved the Winchester brothers, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles), going public about their knowledge of the supernatural world. “One storyline we always talked about, which we never did, was basically Sam and Dean go public,” Dabb shared in an interview. “They’re like, 'Look, we’re putting out a PSA. Monsters are real. If you see something, something shows up in your town, it’s a monster. We can’t be everywhere. We’re just going to get the word out there.'”
Unfortunately, the plan never came to fruition because it would’ve made Supernatural move in an entirely different and “odd” direction. Even Dabb noted that it would’ve been “a little logistically difficult for the show,” adding:
“Suddenly, Sam and Dean are known worldwide, which, again, I think sounds interesting in theory, but I actually think would’ve destroyed the show. It would not have been any good, which is one of the reasons we didn’t do it.”
What Other Plans Did Andrew Dabb Have for ‘Supernatural’?
The Supernatural EP’s plans for the horror fantasy didn’t end there, as he also revealed that there had been talks about bringing back the Antichrist portrayed by (Gattlin Griffith) “in a different way,” but it didn’t pan out. The Antichrist, also called Jesse Turner, was introduced in Season 5, where Castiel (Misha Collins) predicted that the character was destined to aid Lucifer in the war against Heaven. Jesse initially had no idea who he was until Sam and Dean revealed the truth to him, prompting him to disappear and go into hiding, with his whereabouts remaining unknown even when the show ended.
